Broadway actor presents “theatre for the mind and spirit” in Australia

12:26pm Monday, 1st August 2011

1 August 2011 - After successful shows in Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne, Broadway actor Bruce Kuhn  presents “The Gospel of Luke” tonight in Launceston, then moves on to Hobart,   Sydney and Brisbane.

The Bible Society has brought Bruce Kuhn to Australia as part of its 400th Anniversary celebration of the King James Bible.

Taking the Gospel of Luke as his script, Bruce presents a dynamic and fast-paced solo performance.

By playing a Pharisee as a British aristocrat, and the rich barn-building fool as a Scottish farmer, this is a show ready-made for Australian audiences - an apt reminder that the Bible is about real people doing real things.

During a post-show question time Bruce revealed that he once reduced a room of hooded-nuns to a playful uproar when he proclaimed that the shepherds found "Mary and Joseph lying in a manger". Another more recent blooper involved the performance of the Gospel of Mark in Dutch, where the audience started laughing at the crucifixion scene. Bruce stopped the show to ask what was so funny at such a serious moment, to discover that the omission of one three-letter word meant that Jesus ended up sitting on a crown of thorns!

Occasionally, Bruce also slips in an insertion from the other Gospels, leading one audience member in Adelaide to remark, "Isn't the woman at the well from the Gospel of John?”

Kuhn’s theatrical credits include the lead roles of  D’Artagnan in The Three Musketeers and Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He has taught story-telling in nine countries, and currently tours his one-man shows to universities and churches throughout North America and Europe.
