“Evangelism without discipling is fruitless and dangerous” John Stott remembered

4:41pm Sunday, 7th August 2011

Wendy Toulmin, the Executive Officer of the Langham Partnership Australia gave a tribute to at the Sydney memorial service for Dr John Stott. The service was held in St Andrew's Cathedral.

The impact globally of John's life and ministry has been highlighted just this past week through the testimonies written in the remembrance book pages of the John Stott memorial website.  People from more than 80 countries so far, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, testifying to the influence of his books, his preaching, his friendship, his pastoral care.
However his legacy through the global impact of the Langham Partnership and the Lausanne Movement is incalculable. Lausanne with its holistic understanding of Mission, that reflects John's passion to bring the whole of life - individuals, society and creation - under the redeeming power of the whole biblical gospel; and the Langham Partnership, with its reflection of John's passion that evangelism without discipling is fruitless and dangerous, and so there needs to be good bible teaching by preachers, or in books, or in classrooms - to enable growth in depth as well as growth in numbers.
As the Founder of the Langham Partnership he will be remembered as a tireless advocate and friend of the churches in (as John called it) the majority world, demonstrating his concern for their well being through the provision of literature, the support of younger leaders and faculty development of evangelical seminaries, and the grassroots training of pastors and preachers.
I will finish with a quote from Chris Wright, John's successor as Director of Langham Partnership International.  "Like Moses, he was one of the greatest leaders God has given to his people, and yet at the same time one of the humblest men on the face of the earth.  He was, for all of us who knew him, a walking embodiment of the simple beauty of Jesus, whom he loved above all else."
