The past two years have been full of milestones for Sydney singer songwriter Matt Lucas.
Concerts in Louisiana USA with Australian Christian rock band Revive. Guestspeaker at a major worship conference in the US with Jeff Deyo (formerly of Sonicflood). Opening for newsboys in Adelaide. Appearing at Brisbane’s City Carols. Attracting 4000 to his performances at World Youth Day 2008. And a Top 10 hit on the Australian Christian charts.
It is 16 years since Matt’s first professional shows.
His formative years were spent working as a session musician, drummer, and music teacher, and studying for a BA in Theology. He has played with Alabaster Box on its Main Attraction tours and with Tommy Emmanuel. In the seven years since the release of his first album, Matt’s progression continuously unfolds; consistently avoiding the temptation to stick to what is clichéd and stereotyped.
His latest album Some Days Are Better marks a breakthrough for him. Produced by Phil Gaudion (ex Paul Colman Trio), the album is broader in appeal, and warmer in its emotional stance than his previous three projects. It also reveals a new twist in Matt’s style and direction. His lyrics are stronger, and more oblique.
At times, the mood is powerful (on The Long Way Home) and overwhelming (Long Long Way To Go). And other times, Matt is more reflective (Mercy Lights My Way).
His compelling word pictures drive the music forward while sonically revealing the influence of Phil Collins, Paul Colman and Kasey Chambers, whose songs he covers on the record.
One Christian radio programmer suggests, “in an era when empty gestures of style proliferate in music, Matt Lucas’s music speaks with an uncommon candor, intelligence and intensity”. That’s high praise!
Like Steve Grace and many before him, Matt Lucas has a passion to reach this nation with the same unconditional, undeserved love that he’s experienced.
God’s love shines in his music.
