Remembering Euan Fry, Bible translator

6:11pm Thursday, 3rd March 2011

John Harris celebrates the life of Euan Fry who helped bring world class translations of the Bible to the indigenous peoples of Australia and PNG.

A faithful Bible Translator and a long-time servant of the Bible Society, Rev Euan McG. Fry died suddenly in his garden on Tuesday 1st March, 2011

Born in Melbourne in 1933, Euan became a teacher and missionary in Papua New Guinea. After studying theology he was ordained into the Methodist ministry in PNG.  Keenly interested in Bible translation, Euan then led the Tinata Tuna Bible Translation Project.

The Bible Society in Australia appointed Euan as Director of its Translation and Text Division in 1967, a position he held with distinction until his retirement in 1988.  In those years, the Australian translation office was responsible not only for Australia but for PNG and the Pacific as well. Euan was a key figure in world Bible Translation circles at the beginning of the era when Australia led the world in translation strategies and techniques, a role he continued in retirement as Editor of The Bible Translator for 30 years from 1972 to 2002.

Euan keenly promoted the key role of indigenous Bible translators.  He emphasised training and was himself a gifted communicator in the field of translation theory and practice.  Euan was responsible for BSA’s long association with the Kriol Bible Translation in North Australia and many other major translation projects such as the Bislama Bible of Vanuatu. One of his final tasks in BSA was to supervise the adaptation and production of the Australian language version of the Good News Bible.  He was a long-time editor of the world-renowned UBS Handbooks for Bible Translators.  He personally wrote the universally-acclaimed handbooks on Genesis and Proverbs.

Euan and his wife, Jean, displayed deep faith and devotion to Christ and were people of prayer. Euan devoted himself to bringing the message of the Bible to people everywhere in a language they understood.  He served the Bible Society movement in Australia and in the world with integrity and loyalty. His was a life well lived and many Scriptures in indigenous languages in Australia, PNG and the Pacific are his living memorial.
